Sri Anupam Prabhu was the younger brother of Srila Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis, and the father of Srila Jiva Goswami. Formerly he was known as Vallabha Mallick and received the name Anupam from Mahaprabhu after meeting Him. He accepted Lord Chaitanya as the direct incarnation of Lord Ramachandra, and, like Murari Gupta, he maintained his devotion to his Lord unerringly, despite the teachings of Mahaprabhu about Radha Krishna. Thus Chaitanya Mahaprabhu exclaimed, “a servant is glorious who does not leave his master and that master is glorious who does not leave his servitor.”
Sripad Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaja expanded on his previous commentary concerning Govardhan Puja and the loving attitude demonstrated by the Lord toward his devotees. The pastime of Lord Krsna lifting Govardhan hill is a statement of Lord Krsna’s deep affection for his unalloyed Vrindavana devotees and a demonstration of His compassion towards Lord Indra. Lord Krsna’s majestic display is not intended to roughly destroy the ego of Indra. Seeing this loving pastime of Lord Krsna with His devotees, Lord Indra’s heart becomes softened, and his anger and resentment are dissolved in proper realization and love for the charming Lord of all creation.
Lord Chaitanya explains to Sanatana Goswami that Lord Krsna can only be attained through devotional service.
In his purport, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada discusses the nine kinds of devotional service and certifies that one’s birth status is irrelevant if one chants the Holy Names of the Lord. This process of chanting is further glorified by scriptural passages from Jiva Goswami, Rupa Goswami, Sanatana Goswami, Sukudeva Goswami and Yamaraja.
Sri Chaitanya Himself has said: “One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the Holy Name of the Lord constantly.”
Sripad Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaja explained that the Holy Name is not just an external sound vibration. It must also be imbued with the proper conception, as given by Guru, while carefully avoiding the ten offenses against the Holy Name.
Likewise, humility is not achieved simply by surrendering to one’s spiritual master. Humility must also be accompanied by the proper conception — sambandha jnana, recognition of our insignificance and complete dependence upon the Lord. Otherwise, some of the most arrogant and ignorant persons on the planet may consider themselves surrendered to Guru, yet lack any proper conception.
