Continuing with the overview of the Vaisesika philosophy, Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj discusses the remaining 5 of the 7 categories of reality.

• Action (karma) is viewed in the Vaisesika school as physical movement.  Whereas quality is the static character of things, such as gravity or inertia, action is their dynamic character.
• Generality (samanya) is the essence of the common characteristics that unite different entities into one class–men, horses, puppies, etc.  Also translated as universality, it is similar to the Grecian concept of eternal forms.
• Uniqueness (visesa) is the opposite of generality, the characteristics of any given thing which distinguishes it from everything else.  Everything in the world is accompanied by uniqueness in the sense that we can point out “that” chair, “that” insect, etc.
• Inherence (samavaya) is a permanent relation between two entities, one of which inheres in the other.  Quality or action is inherent to a substance, but the substance is not inherent to the quality or action; there is color in cloth, but no cloth in color.
• Nonexistence (abhava) is negative in contrast to the first six categories, which are positive.  Providing an interesting and useful contrast with the logical positivism of modern-day philosophy, the Vaisesika school postulates two kinds of non-existence with several subcategories which are discussed in more detail in the full text.

The first sloka states that devotional service to the Lord immediately yields causeless knowledge and detachment, two important factors on the path of transcendental realization.  Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj distinguishes between jnana vairagya and yukta vairagya to emphasize the importance of rejecting all activities that are not connected with Krsna while positively engaging in activities which are connected with Krsna.  Proper utility determines the spiritual and material nature of an activity.

The second sloka further explains that occupational activities are useless if they do not provoke attraction for the Lord.  Majaraj points out that matter is spatio-temporal.  It is temporary by it’s very nature. Therefore, pursuit of material objectives can never satisfy the spirit soul.

Continuing with the overview of the Vaisesika philosophy, and having completed a review of the first category of Reality, the nine kinds of Substance (dravyas), we move on to the second category of Reality, the twenty-four Qualities (gunas) that may exist in a given substance.  

One should not confuse the usage of the Twenty-four Gunas in the Vaisesika philosophy with the Three Gunas of the Sankhya philosophical system.  Each of these systems comprise independent viewpoints on reality and should be considered to stand alone.  

Each of the Twenty-four Gunas in the Vaisesika system may have subcategories, thus the system becomes a bit complex.  The list includes such qualities as color, taste, smell, sound, number, magnitude, etc. To review all of these categories and subcategories in detail, please see the full text starting on page 26.

This sloka is the answer from Sri Suta Goswami to the first of six questions presented by the Sages of Naimisaranya–”The supreme occupation for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord.”

To better understand this principle in depth, Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj looks into the meaning of several Sanskrit words.  In particular, the word adhoksaje clarifies that we serve the Supreme Being who is above all sense perception and whose Being is the Unity which unifies all beings.  Because we must not think of Krsna as just another living being, Srila Prabhupada chose to use the term Personality of Godhead, the Being of all beings.

The second part of the lecture looks at the requirements for successful devotional service.  Devotional service must be causeless and unbroken to shake-off the material existence.  The two pathways, exploitation (pravrtti-marga) and renunciation (nivrtti-marga), are delineated and compared with bhakti where the senses are used in the service of the Lord.

Finally, Maharaj teaches us that we must look at difficulties as coming from Krsna.  Although there are times when obstacles should be removed, it is usually better to look at difficulties as a way to purify the heart.

By the will and instructions of Srila Gurudev, His Divine Grace Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Maharaj (Sripad Maharaj), Sripad Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj became the president of the Bhaktivedanta Institute (BI) Managing Council after disappearance of Srila Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Maharaj, who is the international director by Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s order. Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada established BI to educate people about science of the soul and science of God by scientific presentation of Krsna consciousness. His Divine Grace Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Maharaj sacrificed his life in carrying out this order of Srila Prabhupada, and met with so much success that the enemies of truth felt threatened that he would take from them the illusions that they so eagerly cherished. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu became as enraged as Lord Narasimha Dev when Nityananda Prabhu was attacked by Jagai and Madhai, but Lord Nityananda magnanimously reminded Mahaprabhu that his mission in Kali Yuga was not to kill the demons but to mercifully save them, for all are fallen in this age. The followers of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Bhaktisvarupa Damodar Maharaj are many, and although, by the Will of Krsna, Srila Bhaktisvarupa Damodar Maharaj has been withdrawn to his eternal pastimes, there is an army of his followers willing to sacrifice their lives to carry on his mission in this world. With the blessings of all the Vaisnavas, in a spirit of unified and firm resolve and dedication, we pray that those who are willing and able to take up the service of Bhaktivedanta Institute may become glorious in fulfilling the desires of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Sripad Maharaj.

After attending the Mangal Arotik and taking the blessings of Gurudev, Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, and five devotees under the auspicious leadership of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj, we started from Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math on 6th May (Dwadasi) 2006, towards South India . The other four devotees who attended were Sripad Jagadananda Prabhu from USA , Sripad Anandavardhan Prabhu from Hungary , Sripad Ram See Prabhu from West Bengal , and Sushen Krsna Das from Orissa. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj

Sripad Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj has great appreciation for Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj, who is a senior disciple of Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj, and has taken sannyas from Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. He has been serving Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj for many years, and Gurudev also has a lot of appreciation for his sincere services to the Gaudiya Guru Parampara. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj is born and brought up from Assam , the neighboring state of Manipur, which is the birth place of our dear Gurudev, Srila Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami (Sripad Maharaj). His ancestors are originally from East Bengal which is at present in Sri Hata district of Bangladesh.

The train started from Kolkata Railway station at 7:10AM in the morning, and the devotees reached Kharagpur station at 9AM. Devotees met our dear godbrother, Sripad Purushottama Jagannatha Prabhu on the train. Taking the darshan of a very dear disciple of Srila Gurudev, Sripad Maharaj, devotees were certain that the yatra would be a great success.

The train reached Bhubaneswar station around 2PM, where our very dear godbother Sripad Trustiman Prabhu from IYF, Bhubaneswar , mercifully arranged maha prasadam for all the devotees on the train. Devotees felt this was special mercy and the blessings of Srila Sripad Maharaja. All these auspicious events on the way gave the devotees an abundance of spiritual happiness.

The train reached Berhampur station in Orissa at 5PM. Sushen Krsna das’ family members, along with his mother, younger sister, grandmother, uncle, aunt and their daughter; received the blessings from Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. Maharaja gave a lot of spiritual nourishment by delivering Krsna Katha at the Berhampur station. They also arranged evening maha prasadam for devotees on the train.

The devotees reached their first destination station, Vijayawada in South Indian, around 3AM on 7th May, 2009. At the station, our dear godbrothers, Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu, Sripad Braja Gopal Prabhu, Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu, Sripad Venkata Krsna Prabhu and Sripad Vaisanava Das Prabhu from Vijayawada met the devotees and offered prasadi mala (offered garlands to deities and Guru varga) to Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj and devotees.

Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu is a senior-most disciple of Gurudev and is the first devotee who helped Srila Sripad Maharaj start the preaching program in Vijayawada . By Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu’s sincere and dedicated service to Srila Sripad Maharaj, he brought many sincere souls to Gurudev. He has successfully preached both outside and inside his family. Sometimes, we find that it is easy to preach outside, but very difficult to preach inside the family. Due to his sincerity and dedication to Srila Sripad Maharaj, Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu got special empowerment from Srila Gurudev. He inspired many devotees to seriously take up Krsna consciousness under the shelter of sadhus, Gurudev and the vaisnavas. Devotees felt very fortunate to have the association of such a wonderful servant of Srila Gurudev and his big devotee family. Devotees also were very happy to see the special motor cycle of Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu. The Hare Krsna kirtan of Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Narasimha kirtan and many more auspicious kirtans start playing automatically when Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu’s motor cycle starts running. He has been preaching throughout Vijayawada for many years on this special vehicle.

Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu arranged for stay of devotees in the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu. Devotees were very inspired to see the service attitude of Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu and the devotees of Vijayawada . Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu arranged for a special air conditioning in the room of his house for the stay of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj, as it was the hot Indian summer.

After the Mangal Aratik on 7th May 2009 in the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu, devotees reached the house of Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu along with Nagar Sankirtan. Devotees performed kirtan, and offered prayers to Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Gandharva Govinda Sundar Jiu in the house of Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu. The devotees’ hearts were fully satisfied by hearing the nectarine Krsna katha from the lotus lips of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. You can find this nectar here.

Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu and the Vijayawada devotees served many varieties of South Indian maha prasadam to the devotees. One time when Srila Gurudev, Srila Sripad Maharaj was on a south India tour and Gurudev asked a South Indian devotee who was traveling with him, he asked “Do you like to have Matrubhasa maha prasadam,” means “do you like to have the mahaprasdam of your home state.” The devotees were remembering this pastime of Gurudev during maha prasadam seva in South India .

Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu then guided the devotees towards Mangal Giri for the darshan of Sri Sri Laxmi Narasimha and Lord Pana Narasimha. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj was leading the kirtan (download mp3), and in his holy association, devotees were chanting the glories of Sripad Prahlad Maharaj and Lord Narasimha Dev in ecstasy, as they were heading towards Mangal Giri. On the way, devotees offered their prayers to the holy Krishna River in Vijayawada . In Mangal Giri, the devotees first took the blessing of Narasimha Dev in the Laxmi Narasimha temple. Then, the devotees started climbing the Mangal Giri hill, performing kirtan on the way to take darshan of Lord Pana Narasimha (download mp3).

The devotees took darshan of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s Padapeet (divine lotus feet of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu), which were established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada, to commemorate Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit to Pana Narasimha temple during His South India tirtha. An elaborate detail of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit to South India is described in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita. The devotees who were present were constantly remembering the ecstatic ocean of love of Mahaprabhu by hearing the divine glories of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit to South India from the lotus lips of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. Upon reaching Pana Narasimha temple, the devotees offered their prayers to Lord Narasimha Dev by chanting and dancing. Sripad Nama sankirtan Prabhu arranged 108 pots of pana (juice prepared from gur (Jaggery, a product which comes from boiling sugar cane juice), karpura, and black pepper) to offer to Lord Narasimha Dev. Lord Narasimha Dev exhibited many divine pastimes at this place. To this day, we can see that when anyone offers a pot of pana to Lord Narasimha Dev, He only takes one half of it and returns the other half as His maha prasad. The priest in the Pana Narasimha temple offered in front of devotees one after another 108 pots of pana by chanting purusha sukta (download mp3) and each time only half the pana will not go in to the mouth of Lord Narasimha Dev from the sankh conch with which the priest offers the pana to Lord Narasimha Deva.

Thus lots of pana mahaprasadam in Pana Narasimha temple got everyone spiritually surcharged to chant more and more the glories of Sripad Prahlad Maharaj and Lord Narasimha Dev under the guidance of Sadhus, Gurudev and Vaisnavas. In the Pana Narasimha temple, devotees met a few engineering students from IIT-Bhubaneswar. The devotees presented them with the teaching of Guru Parampara in scientific language, and they felt very much inspired. They received a lot of association from devotees and also took a few books written by Srila Gurudev.

The devotees came back to the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu at around 2PM, after having darsan of Lord Pana Narasimha Dev and honored maha prasadam. There was a big feast of South Indian maha prasadam in the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu, and the Vijayawada devotees were constantly chanting the glories of the holy name in the association of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj in great ecstasy (download mp3). Sadhu sange Krsna nama ei matra chai samsara jinite ar kano vastu nai. Shanti Mataji (Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu’s brother’s wife) requested Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj to give kanti mala to her son, and Maharaj accepted her request happily and gave many blessings to her son.

In the evening, devotees gathered in the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Prada Prabhu’s house to hear nectarine Krsna katha from lotus lips of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj was constantly chanting the glories of Mahaprabhu’s visit to the South India from the famous Sri Sri Prema Dhama Deva Stotram (condensed version of the Chaitanya Charitamrita), composed by Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj (download). The devotees were completely absorbed in hearing the sweet nectarine pastimes of Lord Gaura Hari. Download nectar here. After hearing the Sri Sri Prema Dham Deva Stotram, Sripad Nama Sankirtan Prabhu was so ecstatic, that he translated a few verses of Prema Dham Deva Stotram into Telugu on Narasimha Chaturdasi day, 8^th May 2009. He was constantly explaining to all devotees the glories of Prema Dham Deva Stotram in great ecstasy.

After taking the evening maha prasadam in the house of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu, the devotees started for Ahobalam by the night train, via Vijayawada station. Sripad Venkata Krsna Prabhu assisted the devotees from Vijayawada to Ahobalam. We reached Nandyal station in the early morning on 8th May 2009, and caught a bus to Allagadda, where our dear godbrother and disciple of Srila Sripad Maharaj, Sripad Murli Purushottama Prabhu, has begun organizing a Bhaktivedanta Institute center. Sripad Murli Purushottama Prabhu received all the devotees and Maharaj with great love and respect.

By the divine arrangement of the Lord, the devotees reached Ahobalam on Narasimha Chaturdasi (8th May 2009), where Lord Narasimha Dev appeared from a pillar and killed the great atheistic demon, Hiranyakashyapu to give protection to His dear most devotee, Sripad Prahlad Maharaj. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj constantly engaged devotees in chanting the divine glories of Sripad Prahlad Maharaj and Lord Narasimha Dev (download mp3).

Sripad Murli Purushottama Prabhu guided the devotees one by one on a tour of the Narashima temples in Ahobalam, while explaining the glories of each temple. Some of the audio recordings of the same can be found here. Devotees went to Vedari Hills to take darsan of Ahobalm with Sripad Murli Purushottama Prabhu on 9th May 2009. In the evening on 9th May 2009 devotees caught the train to return to Vijayawada .

On the morning of 10th May 2009, the devotees reached Vijayawada and everyone went to the house of Sripad Brajagopal Prabhu along with Nagar Sankirtan. Devotees were blessed by sadhu sanga in the house of Sripad Brajagopal Prabhu in the holy association of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. The family members of Brajagopal Prabhu served South Indian style maha prasadam to all the devotees. In the afternoon, there was a house program organized by Sripad Namasankirtan Prabhu, at the home of Sripad Krsna Prema Pada Prabhu. On 11th May 2009, in the early morning, the devotees started for Madaram, a village near Khammam. Sripad Venkata Krsna Prabhu (received Hari Nam during Gaura Purnima 2009 from Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj). Sripad Venkata Krsna Prabhu stays in Madaram and has organized a preaching program in the village. Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj explained to the devotees about the divine pastime of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu which occurred here. This was a discussion between Mahaprabhu and Raya Ramananda, that took place on the banks of Godavari river in Kovvur. All the devotees took the blessings of the holy Godavari River , all the while remembering the divine pastime of Mahaprabhu and Raya Ramananda.

On the 12th May 2009, the devotees started out for Hyderabad . The devotees spent the 13th and 14th of May 2009 in Secunderabad, and Hyderabad . There was a wonderful gathering of sadhu sanga in the house of Sripad Krsnananda Prabhu and Sripad Asit Krsna Prabhu in Secunderabad and Hyderabad . The devotees also visited the ISKCON temples in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Devotees started out for Bangalore on the evening of 14th May, 2009.

Sripad Ramesh Prabhu received the devotees in Bangalore on the morning of 15th May 2009. Sripad Ramesh Prabhu is a software engineer and has been friends with Sripad Gaurachandra Prabhu, Sripad Purushottama Jagannatah Prabhu and Sushen Krsna Das since 2006 in IIT, Kharagpur. Sripad Ramesh Prabhu was present at the B.I. in Kolkata when Sripad Maharaj exhibited his divine disappearance pastime in 2006. Sripad Maharaj loved Ramesh Prabhu greatly, and gave him many valuable instructions to carry out.

On the 15th May 2009, there was a Nagar Sankirtan performed in Bangalore , near Sripad Ramesh Prabhu’s house (download Mp3). On the morning of the 16th, devotees went out on Nagar Sankirtan to carry out book distribution in Bangalore , under the order of our Guru Parampara. In the evening there was sadhu sanga in the house of Sripad Ramesh Prabhu in the holy association of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj. In the satsanga, many friends of Sripad Ramesh Prabhu and Sushen Krsna Das joined. All the participants were highly educated (M.Techs and Ph.D.s from the Premier Institute of India; such as IITs and IISc). Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj and Sripad Jagadananda Prabhu blessed everyone present with nectarine Hari katha. Devotees started from Bangalore to Bhubaneswar on 17th May 2009. When the train reached Vijayawada , many of the welcoming devotees came to take blessings from Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj and offered him a garland and maha prasadam was distributed to the devotees. In Rajamandri station, our dear godbrother Sripad Tripad Prabhu’s father came to take the blessings of Sripad Bhakti Prapanna Tirtha Maharaj and he offered many mangoes and banana maha prasadam to the devotees.

On the evening of 17th May 2009, the devotees reached Bhubaneswar . Our dear god brother, Sripad Trustiman Prabhu received the devotees at the station and arranged accommodations for them in the ISKCON Bhubaneswar temple. On the morning of 18th May 2009, Sripad Trustiman Prabhu arranged a vehicle for the devotees to visit the Anantavasudev temple, Lingaraj, Dandabhanga, Sakhi Gopal and Jagannath Puri Dham. The devotees took rest in the evening at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, Puri, after nagar Sankirtan in Jagannath Puri Dham. On the evening of 17th May 2009, the devotees took the train to Kolkata. After reaching Kolkata, the devotees gave a detailed report about their South India preaching seva to Gurudev Srila Bhakti Sundara Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. Gurudev became very happy upon hearing the report.

Dandavat Pranams

In today’s sanga, we discuss the last two elements in the Vaisesika philosophy of substance — Soul and Mind.  The Soul or atman is characterized as the eternal, all-pervading substratum for consciousness.  According to Vaisesika philosophy there are two kinds of souls: individual (jivatman) and supreme (paramatman or isvara).  The Supreme Soul is inferred to be the Creator of the World using the same kind of logical arguments we have seen with the nyaya philosophy.

The Mind is considered to be the 9th kind of substance, the eternal sense faculty of the individual soul.  Attention is required to prevent a jumble of information from the senses.  That attention is supplied by the mind along with other functions such as thinking, feeling and willing.  We must be careful to recognize that there is a potential for confusion here, because the Vaisesika philosophy collapses the subtle aspects of Mind and Spirit into one.

The early 19th century German philosopher Hegel provides an interesting viewpoint on the existence of Mind.  In his view, the senses perceive things as singular, whereas the ideas of “next-to” or “far-from” are not perceived by the senses, but are conceptual determinations supplied by Mind.  Ancient philosophers were far more thoughtful about the subtle details of the Mind than today’s naive realists.  It is unfortunate that today’s atomic theorists try to reduce all the rich, subtle experiences of Mind into a monochromatic slurry of particulate matter.

From the first sloka of today’s sanga, Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj explains that the Srimad Bhagavatam is called the spotless Purana because it is thoroughly transcendental, and not affected by the Three Modes of material nature.  It offers nothing whereby we may improve our situation on the exploitive plane.  Instead, it’s entire focus is glorification of the Lord–His Name, forms, pastimes, and associates.  Such devotional service or bhakti is the 5th and ultimate goal of life, which supersedes dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

From the second sloka, we see that all living entities are involved with questions and answers.  However, seeking answers to material questions simply leads to more questions since exploitation leads to more exploitation, lust to more lust, and greed to more greed.  As stated by Srila Prabhupada, “satisfaction of the soul can only be obtained by questions and answers on the subject of Krsna.”

Taking additional questions from the devotees, Maharaj discusses a number of additional topics including the purpose of Shiva worship and the reasons why it is necessary to study the Puranas, which elaborate in greater detail the message of the Vedas.

Dandavat Pranams

In this lecture, Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj discusses the nature of the ether (akasa), the 5th gross element in the Vaisesika philosophy.  The ether, which is the medium of sound, has no perceptible qualities and lacks a manifest color or form, thus it cannot be sensuously detected by an observer.  Yet we can logically infer its existence from sound.

A comparison is made to a cube of sugar which has qualities such as whiteness, sweetness, cubicity, et al.  However, if we remove all such qualities in our minds, then the cube’s being can only be inferred.  This quality-less being is the “thing in itself” which the 18th-century Prussian philosopher Immanuel Kant named in his analysis of the nature of reason.  The early 19th-century German philosopher Hegel even said that being and nothing are the same, since they both have the same indeterminate nature.

We can see from this that reality has a very deep structure which the scientists try to get very cheaply by claiming that atoms randomly aggregate to create life and the things around us.  We must also say that a finite mind cannot independently create a world.  In the final analysis, we must go further still to understand how Krsna is the origin of everything.

To begin, Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj returns briefly to the first chapter to locate the Six Questions of the sages at Naimisaranya that will be answered by Suta Goswami.  Following that, the discussion turns to the initiation of brahmanas and vaisnavas, where a vaisnava is considered to be more than a brahmana because he engages in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, which goes beyond the four activiites of dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.  Since brahmana or vaisnava initiation constitutes a second birth (dvija) into transcendental life, beyond physical or seminal birth, Sri Gurudeva gives a devotee a spiritual name at this time.

From the 3rd sloka, it is shown that the Bhagavatam is the natural commentary on the Vedanta-sutra. It is the torchlight whereby we can discern the three transcendental features of the Absolute Truth:

• Brahman - the all-accommodating aspect
• Paramatma - the all-pervading aspect
• Bhagavan - the all-attractive aspect

Dandavat Pranams

This session begins discussion of the Vedic Atomic Theory (vaisesika).  Vaisesika differs from modern atomic theory in many ways.  Vaisesika considers atoms to be concrete, indivisible particles whereas the modern theory defines atomic particles as divisible mathematical entities which must be shown to exist in the laboratory.  Numerous difficulties plague the modern theory including the problem of infinite divisibility, problems with cosmology, and failure to account for the behavior of systems of particles.  Most importantly, the modern theory does not account for mind or person, whereas vaisesika theory accounts for these as unique substances among the Nine Dravyas.

Maharaj begins by discussing the ship and captain analogy where the ship represents the message of Gita and Bhagavatam, and the captain represents Gurudeva.  With these two one can easily cross the ocean of material existence.  Otherwise, one who is drowning in the ocean cannot possibly save himself or others by his own efforts without getting help from someone who is already safely situated in the ship.

Our situation is not improved by pursuit of conventional education because the entire system is directed toward sense gratification rather than self-realization.  Nor is it improved by going to church or temple one day out of the week and then pursuing material enjoyment during the rest of the week.  Only by Krsna’s grace can we encounter the direction of Gurudeva and by his grace aspire to achieve loving service to the Lord — Krsna prema, the highest form of love.

Maharaj finishes with a brief discussion of the religious codes prescribed in the Bhagavatam — truthfulness, austerity, cleanliness, and mercy.  These are connected with the four regulative principles that are also prescribed there — no gambling, no intoxication, no elicit sex, and no eating meat.

Maharaj begins with discussion of the Concept of Liberation as it is defined in the nyaya system.  Attained in three stages — sravana, manana and nididhyasana — liberation is the highest level to which a jnani can aspire.  On the other hand, bhakti practitioners take the path of faith, surrender and devotional service which leads to the transcendental world, a plane higher than liberation.

In the second part of the session, Maharaj discusses the Concept of God and the three arguments given by the nyaya philosophers for the existence of God:

• the causal argument,
• the existence of adrsta meaning “the unseen” or fate, and
• scriptural testimony.

Regarding scriptural testimony, Maharaj points to the critical role played by Gurudev.  Bhagavad Gita was around for thousands of years, yet it was not widely understood in the modern age until Srila Prabhupada presented it to the world.

Maharaj discusses the confusion surrounding the incarnation of the Personality of Godhead.  Concocting an “incarnation” is now an ordinary business.  Those with little intelligence claim everyone is a God.  However, when God actually comes, He does not claim to be God, but makes himself to be an ordinary son of devotees, that He might enjoy filial relations.  There is no question of man becoming God through meditation or sacrifice.

In the second sloka, we see that the conditions within the present age of Kali make it impractical to attain self-realization by prolonged meditation or great sacrifices.  Chanting the holy names and remembering the pastimes of the Lord in the association of genuine devotees are the recommended activities for this age.

This session focuses entirely on the Concept of the Individual Soul (Atman). The materialistic carvaka school, Buddhist philosophy, and the analysis of David Hume, the influential 18th century Scottish philosopher, are compared with the nyaya and vaisesika systems. In these later two systems, the soul is shown to be a unique substance — indestructible and eternal — with consciousness as it’s attribute. The nyaya arguments for the permanent existence of the soul, and the individual nature of the soul, are discussed in considerable detail.

Maharaj discusses the many thousands of forms of incarnations of the Lord who appear for the maintenance of the universe (Visnu) and the protection of the devotees.  All such incarnations are an expression of the Lord’s internal energy, and since the activities of the Lord exist on an absolute plane, they benefit those who are present during those pastimes as well as those who hear the transcendental narratives about them.

From the second sloka, we learn that uttama means “above the plane of nescience.”  It is because the pastimes of the Lord are transcendental, a devotee never tires of hearing of the activities of the Lord.   This is contrasted with the Mayavada practitioners who chant to achieve liberation, but who ultimately fail to overcome the need to satisfy their desires.  Of the three planes — exploitative, renunciated and dedication — only those who learn to redirect their desires to the satisfaction of Krsna can overcome the material entrapment and achieve liberation.

Having finished with the Four Sources of Knowledge (pramana) in the previous lecture, we move on to a discussion of the Nature of the Physical World as delineated by the Twelve Objects of Knowledge (prameya).  Comparisons are made with the more limited views of Western Philosophy, especially that of Kant’s reckoning of time and space.  The discussion then moves to the Concept of the Individual Soul, briefly comparing the various Indian schools and the views of Descartes.

C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

It is mentioned in scriptures that if we don’t do the parikrama of Lord and His devotees then we have to do parikrama of unlimited material universes endlessly. Briefly about Mayapur Parikrama…

In Nabadwip Dham devotees are eternally engaged in chanting the glories of Gaura Hari, Nityananda Prabhu and Gaura Bhaktavrinda. By the association of devotees of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu we can develop the attraction for Krsna Prema which is the ultimate goal of every living being.

Navadwip Parikrama started from Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, in Kolerganj, Nabadwip. With the sankirtan party under the association of Sadhus, Gurudev and Vaisnavas we went to the Ganga Ghat where we take a boat to cross the Ganges to reach Mayapur. While going to Mayapur on the boat we cross two rivers Yamuna Nadi (Jalangi River) and Ganga Nadi. If we carefully observe we can find some colour differences between River Yamuna and River Ganga.

In the entrance of Mayapur we can find many maths and temples of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It will be like as if we are entering Goloka Dham. Everywhere we can hear the transcendental vibrations of Maha Mantra. We went to Nandana Acharya’s house where Lord Nityananda meets Mahaprabhu.

We visited Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s Pushpa Samadhi mandir at ISKCON Mayapur. We went to Yogapitha which is Mahaprabhu’s Birthplace. There is a neem tree under that Mahaprabhu had taken birth, hence His name is Nimai. The local ladies and People like to call Mahaprabhu as Nimai. After that we visited Tomb of Kazi, Srivas Angan, Lord Jagnnath’s Mandir, Simanthadwip and Rudradwip.

Next day we visited Koladwip and many Ukrainian and Russian devotees joined us. We went to Amra Ghat (where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to eat mangos), Narsingapally, where Lord Nrsimha Dev appeared. Our Tripad Prabhu had joined us there. Next day we went to Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s Bhajan Kutir and Samadhi Mandir. We end our Parikrama at Brindaban Das Thakur’s Temple.

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu showered his unlimited Blessings on us. Only we are safe in this dangerous material world and feel secured under the shelter and guidance of Sadhus, Gurudev and Vaisnavas. By their mercy only our life will be successful and Krishna will shower His unlimited karuna on us. This is the great mercy of Srila Sripad Maharaj that he has guided us to HH Bhakti Madhav Puri Maharaj and by the mercy of HH Bhakti Madhav Puri Maharaj we are happily progressing in our spiritual journey under the loving shelter of Srila Bhakti Sundar Govindadeva Goswami Maharaja.

HH Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj discuss from Subjective Evolution of Consciousness page number 19.

And reality is subjective. It is based on consciousness.
Color is perceived through the eye. It is not that the color
is there and the eye can catch it. But the seer sees through
the eye and perceives color. So color is a perception. Its position
as actual substance should be traced to the subtle
plane of existence. This is the nature of reality: the gross is
coming from the subtle. In Så&khya philosophy, of course,
that is described as a bifurcated thing. According to Så&khya
philosophy, there are three branches of reality: the sense, the
senses, and the sense objects. Sound is created by the ear,
color is produced by the eye, and so on.

It seems that recently Dawkins has, to some degree, backpeddled in his thinking about the existence of God and purpose in the universe, admitting to the possibility of deism or an extra terrestrial origin of life. Dawkins was incredulous when he learned that the Natural History Museum in which the debate was held, was built for the glorification of God through science, by those who saw the study of Zoology, Geology, etc. as a means to further Man’s appreciation of the wonderful creation of its Creator.

Commentary by Srilla Bhaktivinoda Thäkura

  Logic that comes from the soul’s own natural knowledge is pure and faultless. The philosophy that comes from such logic is the actual truth. Separated from that natural knowledge, true logic has no power to stand. However, logic that comes from material knowledge, the logic that is seen everywhere in this world, is always mixed and impure. Philosophies that come from such mixed logic are always faulty and lacking. Such philosophies are never good at describing God. Mixed logic is not the proper tool to describe the Supreme Truth. Pure logic which takes shelter of the soul’s natural knowledge is the proper tool to describe the Supreme Truth. Here someone may ask, “What is this natural knowledge of which you speak?” The answer is: The soul is spiritual, and therefore naturally full of spiritual knowledge. That original knowledge possessed by the soul is called here “natural knowledge”. That natural knowledge is eternally present in the soul. It is not created by perceiving the contents of he material world. The activities of that natural knowledge are called pure logic. That natural knowledge was known by the soul before the soul ever had any knowledge of the material world.

  That knowledge is: (1) I am. (2) I continue to be. (3) I am happy. (4) My happiness comes from a certain place. a shelter, a reservoir of happiness. (5) It is natural for me to take shelter of that reservoir of happiness. (6) I am eternally a follower of that reservoir of happiness. (7) That reservoir of happiness is very beautiful. (8) I have no power to abandon that reservoir of happiness. (9) My present condition is lamentable. (10) Abandoning that lamentable condition I should take shelter of that reservoir of happiness. (11) This material world is not my eternal home. (12) By becoming elevated in this mateerial world I do not become elevated eternally.

 If logic does not takle shelter of this natural knowledge, logic remains mixed with matter. Then logic is only a babbler of nonsense. Even in ordinary material science, first some axioms must be accepted. In mathematics, astronomy, or other sciences, one cannot make progress if one does not first accept the axioms. In the science of understanding the Supreme Truth one must also first accept some axioms, the axioms given by natural knowledge. Those axioms are the root from which the tree of spiritual knowledge grows.

Gauranga Premananda das says: Could you please elaborate or explain this perfect logic? these 12 steps. Are there other pure logics proving God?

Who verily knows and who can here declare it, whence it was born and whence comes this creation?

The Gods are later than this world’s production. Who knows, then, whence it first came into being.

In this Satsanga a scientific discussion is presented on understanding how one can come to the transcendental platform. A verse from “Rg Veda” is also discussed.

In one of the past Satsangas, His Holiness Bhakti Madhava Puri Swami, Ph.D. (Puri Maharaj) of Bhaktivedanta Institute, explained that actually it is due to the acintya sakti of Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna. Just by thinking about it, our hand moves, so we can say it is due to the acintya sakti of Lord Sri Krishna, and thus we cannot understand it.

In the Satsanga Puri Maharaj answered that actually it is very difficult to understand how movement occurs. Just like our hair is growing out from our head. How is it happening? Are we in control of growing our hairs on our head? The finger nails are also growing out. They are constantly growing out so we have to cut them. Similarly, can we stop the growth of our hairs so that we don’t have to have haircut anymore? We are not in control of many such activities of our own body and yet somehow they are happening. Even breathing - ordinarily we are not in charge of that. It is being regulated by what is called the autonomic nervous system. Our heart is beating; blood pressure is being maintained. All these things are all being done automatically.

Many things are happening in the body like that. We are eating food and it is digesting very nicely in most cases, unless we have some illness. We are not in charge of that. Then how does it happen? If we had to figure out how to make the stomach digest food everytime we ate, then it would be a very complicated process indeed. So, somehow all those complicated things are going on and the automatic systems of the body are controlling them. That is what the scientists explain.

But Vedantic science (or Samkhya) says that it is done by the modes of material nature - the trigunas: sattva, raja and tama. They are causing the permutations, combinations and movements of the things that are made up of those three modes occurring in this world. Bodily substance and activities are actually composed of and controlled by the modes of material nature. How to understand this? For that we require some philosophical understanding about modes of material nature. How they are working will determine how the activities of this world are going on. They are actually not controlled by us.

Srila Prabhupada explained that we desire and God fulfills that desire. This idea is also given in the Bhagavad-gita - ye yatha mam prapadyante, the Lord is fulfilling the desires of the living entities, according to what way they relate to Him, depending on how much they surrender to Him. How they relate to Him in whatever way, He fulfills their needs.

It is also not a function of Paramatma, or the localized aspect of Krishna. Material energy is one of Krishna’s energies, mayadhyaksena prakrti (Bg 9.10).  It is His external energy (bahiranga shakti). Thus He does not directly manage the affairs of the material world. Even though material energy is Krishna’s energy it is, nonetheless, His indirect energy. It is not His direct or internal energy (antaranga shakti) and thus He is not directly concerned with it., just as we are not directly concerned with our breathing. Breathing directly concerns us but we are only indirectly concerned with it, we don’t have to consciously do it. It is going on automatically. As we have mentioned previously, it is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. So Krishna also has an automatic system, His material energy.

The material energy works according to certain mechanical rules, and is going on under the control of those laws like a machine (Bg. 18.61 yantra arudhani mayaya). In that way Krishna’s automatic system is working so that He has no need to pay any attention to that. Thus the external material energy is performing all the actions and reactions of the body.

When a living entity turns directly to Krishna and focuses his attention on His personal form, then by His mercy Krishna establishes direct guidance through guru and vaisanava who act under His internal energy. In this way He shows concern for what a devotee wants, what a devotee is saying to Him, etc. That is a platform transcendental to the external workings of the material world. Only a very fortunate soul can come to that divine platform of action when he gets a connection with a pure devotee, by surrendering to and serving that authentic devotee (i.e. a devotee who is likewise surrendered to Krishna through His devotee. The first such devotee in our parampara line is Brahma). One who can do that achieves the transcendental platform. But without surrender and without service under the guidance of a vaisnava, he remains in contact only with the external energy. Everything in that unsurrendered state is going on according to the laws of material nature, according to the mundane administrative arrangement of the Lord.

To understand these things in detail may be difficult for the conditioned soul because it is a great science. Still, in a general way we can understand the basics as explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Our purpose is not to simply continue in the material consciousness of life. Material consciousness is an unsurrendered stage of existence - a stage where we are rather tying to lord it over and exploit the resources of the material nature. That attitude is putting us under the control of the modes of material nature or the three gunas. For that reason we will have to work according to the actions and reactions of those modes.

A devotee, therefore, wants to take complete shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord’s devotees, and wants to learn how to come under the control of the antaranga sakti, which is the internal energy or Will of the Lord, the transcendental energy of the Lord. By the grace of Guru, by the grace of sadhu, by the grace of vaisnava we can gradually come under the control of that internal energy by accepting their guidance. Their influence can take us to the stage where we can come under the full control of the antaranga sakti, the transcendental energy of the Lord. Hence one has to approach a devotee in the proper mood of humility. And even then ‘approach’ means to humbly submit ourselves to the divine will that descends through Krishna’s devotee and in that way come under the influence of the internal energy by their grace. In that way we can enter the higher world, the service world, where all are serving, dedicating units.

We are always under the influence of something. We think that in this material world we are independent, but actually we are under the influence of maya sakti, the external energy of the Lord. By changing our attitude from that of exploitation to dedication it is possible for us to come under the influence of the internal energy of the Lord.  One who engages in unselfish devotional service, sacrificing everything for the service to the Lord, will gradually be allowed to enter the divine world. Under the influence of that world his whole life will be magically transformed.

Pure devotees exist in this world to help us in our journey back to Godhead, so we must always remember that Gurudeva is not an ordinary person. Guru actually serves as a function of the Supreme Lord. Guru is the Supreme Lord’s function of gathering up the conditioned souls and taking them back to Godhead. Guru takes them back to the lotus feet of the Lord. That is the real meaning of Guru – one who can direct us in that way. And wherever that function is found we should bow our head there and try to serve so that we can assume our spiritual position in the world of service. It is foolish and suicidal to give resistance to the manifest form of such divine mercy.

Our proper position, constitutional position, is that we are the eternal servants of the Supreme Lord. What we are is very important to understand, and we should not minimize the scientific process given in the scriptures for achieving our constitutional vocation. We may be very careful not to minimize that by taking this process cheaply, i.e. approaching guru while retaining some mundane purposes. Rather we want to cooperate fully with the agents of the Lord and thus attain our true position as spiritual beings, endeavoring our utmost to go back home, back to Godhead.

H.H. Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaj also discussed the second sloka of the Nasadiya sutras from the Rg veda. [Nasadiya Sukta, Rigveda, Canto 10, Hymn 129. (English rendering by Ralph T.H. Griffith, 1889)]

Na mrityuraseedamritam na tarhi na ratrya anha aseetpraketah

Aneedavatam svadhayatadekam tasmadhchanyanna parah kim canas [2]

Death was not then, nor was there aught immortal: no sign was there, the day’s and night’s divider. That One Thing, breathless, breathed by its own nature: apart from it was nothing whatsoever.

Maharaja’s commentary.

It is mentioned here in an obscure language that temporality or time is absent by invoking the absence of death. Without time there is no space or anything occupying space, and no movement. The word death or mortal also refers to that which is finite. Whatever is finite has limit in time and space. For example, a stone is a finite thing, because there is a space in which the stone exists and then at its limit there is a space where it does not exist. It only goes on to a certain extent and then it ceases to be. The stone is there, held in your hand. It has certain boundary. It has certain size. If we determine its size, then you know there exists a place where there is no stone – the boundary. So in that sense we can say that that is where the stone is dead or dies. Beyond a certain limit, the stone dies and becomes air. Air is outside the limit of stone, and what is outside or beyond the limit of stone, we can call it the death of the stone where the stone does not exist anymore. So the stone has a certain space where it exists and a certain space where it does not exist. Therefore we call it finite.

But that which exists without limit, does not have any boundary. That which does not cease to exist in space is called infinite. And that which does not cease to exist in time, we can call that immortal. This sloka is saying there was no death - meaning there was nothing finite or temporal, and neither was there anything infinite or immortal. So this represents a stage of complete lack of all determination. Nothing was there to be determined. This explains something like the impersonal conception of Brahman, which is the indeterminate or undifferentiated aspect of Brahman. There was nothing there to which a reference could be made. And this idea is again reinforced by the next sentence which says that no sign was there. Even the distinction between day and night was not there. This again indicates the lack of any determination.

What is meant by sign? The word ‘sign’ implies representation. A sign indicates that there must be something there to signify or represent. So the idea of signifying or representing is implied by the word sign. Thus three things are present since the action of signifying implies that a signifier, sign and thing signified must exist. Therefore, what it is being presented here is that if there is no sign then there is nothing to be signified. For example, ‘day’ signifies that there is light – or that the sun is out. Where there is no sign, there is also nothing to signify, and therefore nothing to distinguish as one thing being different from another. That state of complete indetermination or complete indifference we call that the impersonal conception of Brahman - where there is no differentiation, no duality of any kind. That is the way the impersonalists understand Brahman. Of course, Vaisnavas understand Brahman differently. Brahman does not carry the same undifferentiated meaning for Vaisnavas who accept the indeterminate universality of Brahman as only an abstract moment of the intrinsically dynamic differentiation within Brahman.

For the Vaisnavas, Brahman does not mean that there is no distinction. Rather Brahman implies that no distinction has been made. No consciousness is active there or it is simply remaining in a deep sleeping stage. Just as in this world some people are not making proper discrimination about things. We can say they are sleeping in this world – or they have a sleeping consciousness. For instance, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant called his unconsciousness of the real meaning of causality,  “dogmatic slumber.”

What is the soul and what is the body? Those who don’t make any distinction between body and soul consider that everything is merely the physical body. They make no distinction between body, mind and soul. However, that does not mean that the distinction is not there.  Animals also make no such distinction, so at that level they are like the animals. But distinction is there - the soul is there, mind is there, even if some people are not making a distinction of those things. They have no knowledge of that distinction, and thus no awareness or consciousness of that fact. This merging of what is actually distinct into indeterminate oneness is similar to the impersonal conception of Brahman.

If individuals have no consciousness of something then for them it appears as if it is not there. However it may actually be there, but they are not taking any note of it. They do not notice it due to their absorption in particular ways of living, or thinking or their particular stage of awareness. So when awareness is not awakened, then one may be in at a stage of making no distinctions and consider things to be indeterminate. The finer determination of things is there but only by coming in contact with those who have knowledge of that distinction, then we may also learn from them how to become aware of it. What is already there is not known to the sleeping consciousness, but is known to the awakened sage.

     Thinking is an activity. Knowing is an activity. That means consciousness is also an activity. Hegel said that the “I” is pure restlessness, pure activity, or pure negativity. Activity means change. And whatever changes must negate its present situation in order to change or appear in another situation. For a flying arrow its present position in space must be negated in order to move to a further position in space. The tensed bowstring imparts the force to the arrow for its movement or its negation of place to take occur. But in the case of thinking, what is the force that is activating it? According to Aristotle, thinking moves itself. It is self active or spontaneous. For him, thought thinking itself is God. This must not be misconceived as our thought or finite thought, but the Infinite or Pure Thought of the Absolute, from which all other finite movement comes.

When thought reflects upon itself, i.e. when thinking thinks about thinking, this self-reflection is what is called I. So we can understand why Aristotle called this God. The “I” also means identity. When I ask what is my real identity, I am asking, “who am I?” When someone wants to establish your identity, they want to know who you are.

      Identity is generally thought to refer to a numerical unity or one. However, that is not the case, because identity is a comparative term. In other words two things are required. Identical twins refer to two bodies. Even self-identity requires thought as subject, dealing with itself, its own thought, as object. So it apprehends itself by dividing itself. Or it reflects upon itself, i.e. makes itself object to itself as subject. In this way we say “I.”

     Consciousness is subjective and has an object of consciousness. But consciousness can also be conscious of itself. In that case it is called self-consciousness or Ego. Consciousness can also take different forms or shapes, such as knowing, thinking, feeling or willing. In that case it is called Mind. It can also take the form of a sensuous object. In that case it is called sentient. Behind or implicit to all these different forms, however, is thinking, although it may not be explicit to the consciousness when it is in its different forms.

     Depending on the different forms of consciousness an individual may not be able to access all the other forms of consciousness. Some may not be able to access their mathematical intelligence, or others their literary intelligence, or linguistic intelligence, etc. Some may not be able to access their artistic ability, and different forms of life, such as animals, are not able to access their thinking capacity. They are able to feel, and usually have strong feelings, and senses, but thinking is not accessible to them, even though it is there implicitly even in animals. Thus Man is called a rational animal. He is distinguished by his ability to think, and not merely act instinctively.

     For knowing, what is the necessary requirement? Knowing that an object is there is one requirement, but it is also required to know what the object is. These are not the same thing. Knowing that something is there refers to its being, but knowing what is there requires a determination of its being or determinate being. And what does that require? Determination requires thought or the explicit thinking aspect of consciousness, which we have explained is constituent of consciousness. Thinking, or the content of thinking, is what constitutes our personality, or the person. In order to be a person, there must be consciousness, but more significantly, when we say, ‘I,’ we must be thinking, as Descartes claimed.

     When the true knowledge or consciousness of the self or ‘I’ and our relationship with God are unknown or we are unconscious of that, then the individual in ignorance identifies with a limited or vitiated form of consciousness, and that is called the false ego.

     We can understand that there is a restricted (or conditioned) and unrestricted (or liberated) sense of self. In the unrestricted or universal sense, the ‘I’, exists in all the instances, circumstances, or arrangements of my body. I call myself ‘I’, whether I am sitting, standing, eating, running, thinking, whatever. Whatever the body is doing, ‘I’ remains the same. The body may be young, old, or middle-aged. The body keeps on changing - the situations of the body keep on changing, but ‘I’ remains the same. Just like the river Ganges, sometimes it overflows, sometimes it even changes its course, sometimes it has less water, sometimes more water. The water is always moving, changing, but still the flowing river is always identified as the Ganges. This means that the Ganges is something universal, i.e. it is an idea that is not associated merely with some particular sensuous experience. Similarly, the body is particular, the mental state is particular: sometimes we are happy, and sometimes we are unhappy. The mind is changing, the body is changing, but the ‘I’ remains the same.

     So the ‘I’ is of a different categorical nature than the situations that the ‘I’ identifies with. Thus we can categorize ‘I’ as a universal entity that is, moreover, not an entity or thing, but pure activity, as we explained before. However the ‘I’ is also not infinitely universal. Mathematicians know that there are different types of infinity, some larger than others. In other words, I can know from a first person perspective what is going on with my body, but not what is going on with yours. So the universality of my ‘I’ is limited. ‘I’ is a universal, but it is a limited universal. So the proper term would be infinitesimal, as our infinity is limited.

     Human beings are special among all the creators of the universe, because they have developed thinking to a very high degree of abstraction, and due to that they can understand a concept like ‘I’. Non human creators can’t say ‘I’, because their thinking is not so exclusively developed. Thus it is not possible for them to think: “Why am I suffering?” They must simply suffer their fate, unhappily, no doubt.

     What is the influence of the negative activity or the activity of thinking on the positive activity of the body and vise versa? We can’t say “positive” if there is no negative. There is relation; one can’t exist without the other. They are related although they are totally opposite. In electricity we have negative and positive charges, and in a magnet north pole and south pole, but they are complete opposites. Thinking can’t be detected by the senses. But if what we think about is a sensuous object then it has a positive significance to us. We call the experience of the sensuous or empirical field positivity. But we also experience thinking, and since it is not sensuous experience we can call it negativity.

     The negative is always related to the positive, and positive is always related to the negative. For example an object, say, a dog is here and a cow is there. From a sense point of view the dog and cow can be felt, seen, smelled and so on. But thinking or making the judgment that, here is the dog, there is the cow is not a sense activity. The determination that what is in front of me is a cow is not a sense determination, it is a judgment. I see some black, some white, some long, some big, some different qualities. I am seeing, but the judgment of what that I am seeing, that is coming from another place and not from the senses.

     There are so many things in this world that are black, white, small and long. However, this information is not enough to say that, that thing is a cow. Senses can only detect the qualities of the thing like color, the shape, the weight, the hardness and the softness. But to determine what that thing is, requires another principle that is a non sensuous principle. Thus it is above the senses.

     The word cow, the idea cow doesn’t come from the senses. It comes from the mind or the thinking. That is called judgment. To say ‘this is’ and then give it a name means to judge what this is. When we say ‘this’, we utter an ‘indexical’ or referential word - an abstract thing. ‘This’ refers to everything and thus ‘this’ is indeterminate. To determine what ‘this’ is requires a judgment or determination. Determining of ‘this’ means thinking is involved. To think what ‘this’ is, to give some definition to this, is called determination or thought.

     So from where does the thought of cow come? The word or idea is coming from thought. From where the thought of cow is coming we don’t actually know. That may not be the word cow, it may me ‘go’ in Sanskrit. ‘go’ and cow are the same word actually, they sound the same, they come from the same word. The original word was ‘go’ and in English it came down to cow. But from where the original word ‘go’ came from we can’t say.

        From all of this, I hope we can see that identity is a very important idea. Scientists don’t know much about it. They use it, but like “cow” and so many other words, they don’t know much about what they are saying or what they are doing. Still, identity is a very fundamental concept for them. For example, scientists think only in terms of atoms and molecules. For them identity means the atom. The atom, in chemistry, generally retains its identity regardless of whatever situation it is in. For scientists the atom or molecule is the basic principle of identity. They are the things that maintain their identity throughout time and throughout different circumstances or situations.

     The identity of the carbon atom remains throughout all its occurrences in chemistry. Of course in physics, from the nuclear principle it is different. Carbon can be broken down into neutron, proton, electron and all those subatomic particles become the principle identities. But otherwise, the carbon atom is the same in a rose and a caterpillar. How can we distinguish the carbon which is present in both rose and caterpillar? Scientists can’t speak about what distinguishes the carbon in a rose and a caterpillar, because their focus for identity is based upon atoms and molecules only. This is foolishness. They are not realizing that they are invoking the category of identity at a very low level, or one specific level. But the idea of identity exists at the grass level, at the caterpillar level, at the cow level, at the man level, at the level of a planet and earth. We can find identities at all levels, and they cannot all be encompassed at the level of the identity of atoms.

Sir Isaac Newton

Newton ’s three laws of motion are well known in scientific literature. The first one is called the law of inertia. According to the first law an object at rest tends to remain at rest and an object in motion tends to remain in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force.

The second law is the one most people are familiar with in the science courses and is know as law of force. According to the second law, the acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of that force, in the same direction as the net force, and inversely proportional to the mass of the object. The same can be expressed as a = F/m.

Constant velocity is called speed but acceleration is the change in speed or change in the velocity of an object. So if the velocity is described with the symbol ‘v’ then acceleration is the change in ‘v’ with respect to time ‘t’. In calculus it is described by ‘d’ differentiation, i.e., differential symbol ‘dv’ over ‘dt’ and we can express the acceleration as a = dv/dt. This indicates that acceleration is the change in velocity per unit change in time. When we drop something from a building — say a penny, the penny is at rest (v= 0) when we are holding it in our hand but when we drop it, it immediately begins to accelerate due to the force of gravity acting upon it. As it continues to move downward (increasing x) it will move at increasingly higher velocity. If that penny should hit someone on the head it may kill him/her depending on what velocity it has reached. Normally, if we drop a penny on someone’s head it won’t cause any damage. But if we drop it from a high distance and it falls on the head that same penny can crack the skull and kill the person. Thus it is to be concluded that it is not the penny which is responsible for killing the person, rather it is the velocity.

The third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. According to Newton ’s third law, whenever two objects interact with each other both of them apply forces upon each other. The interaction can be possible when, the objects are in physical contact with each other or they are physically separated. Thus forces in general are classified as contact forces and action-at-a-distance forces. Frictional/resistance force, tensional force and normal force are the contact forces and on the other hand, gravitational force, electrical force and magnetic force are the action-at-a-distance forces.

A devotee asked a question to His Holiness Bhakti Madhava Puri Swami (BMP), Ph.D. of Bhaktivedanta Institute, in the weekly Satsanga on 3^rd of August, 2008: “What is the purpose of Newton ’s first law? Is it not true that first law is just a natural conclusion of second law? The second law states that F=ma. According to the second law, if the force ‘F’ is zero then the acceleration ‘a’ is zero, and if the acceleration ‘a’ is zero then the force ‘F’ is zero. Thus can we accept that the first law is a special case of second law and there is no need to mention it separately?” BMP explained the various details in answering this question and said that Newton ’s first law is more than just a special case of the second law. The first law describes a negative force and thus is a negative law. According to first law if we don’t apply enough force to a body, it won’t move. The first law is not merely applicable to zero force but it includes forces which are not sufficient to generate change in the speed/rest of a body. The first law tells us what force is needed to change the speed of a body, or what resistance has to be overcome. If the mass is too big as compared to the applied force then the force will be negated and thus can be called a negative law since it explains the negation of force. For example a small meteor can hit the earth with appreciable force but it may have no effect on the speed of the earth.

It is also sometimes explained in the scientific literature that that Newton ’s first law establishes the inertial frame by which we measure acceleration. That becomes important when we talk about, say, movement inside an airplane. If we drop a ball from our hand sitting in an airplane, and if the airplane is accelerating, the ball won’t drop. It will move backwards at first, i.e. it will move horizontally. Hence, apparently it is violating Newton ’s law of gravity. Thus we must know what the inertial frame of reference is, since without that Newton ’s law may not be properly applied.

Hence the first law is essential and can’t be replaced as a special case of second law. First we must know the inertial frame of reference and then we can know about the accelerating frame of reference. We know from Einstein’s general theory of relativity that Newton ’s laws are not valid at very high velocities approaching the speed of light, or for very massive bodies. This is because of the Lorentz transformation SQRT(1 – v²/c²)^-1 that becomes very important when v à c, where c is the speed of light. Thus Newton ’s laws have to be replaced by Einstein’s equations.

The devotee further asked the question, “Does the concept of inertia create the notion of will that a body posses? Materialists argue that the sense of ‘I’ and instinct of survival are nothing but the manifestation of inertia, a simple property of a body of matter.” BMP explained that organic matter is a spontaneously acting dynamic system. Matter is considered inert and doesn’t spontaneously move. What is causing matter to come to a state of spontaneous dynamic equilibrium? In other wards a living body is violating the inertial laws by moving and maintaining its ‘self’ against the environment. It is violating the law of inert matter. That is why we don’t expect that matter would give rise to life. The living body is not only a dynamic system but it is exchanging matter with the environment – taking matter in through a boundary and similarly eliminating matter. Inert matter is not expected to exhibit this type of spontaneous dynamic behavior.

We don’t know how we could interpret the dynamic equilibrium of living organisms with inertia. Inertia refers to the property of matter to remain in an unmoving state, or even if it is moving how it can establish any dynamic equilibrium without assistance. Sometimes it is argued that a living organism wants to continue living, so life has also a conservation principle similar to matter. It is the property of matter to conserve itself, so life has also the property of conservation.

We also agree with that. The conservation principle of life is known as sat in Vedic literature. But that would mean that the living organism will not die. Then, how can scientists explain the conservation of life at the death of a living organism?

Big Bang Model

We know the conservation law of matter – matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Of course applying Einstein’s theory in the case of matter we can transform matter into energy and energy into matter, i.e., E=MC^2. So conservation of matter means it can’t be created or destroyed but it can be transformed. Thus the destruction of both energy and matter can’t happen at the same time. Here is a big problem. Where does this energy and matter come from if it can’t be created? The Big Bang will be in trouble if we show that the matter and energy are somehow created. Thus it seems to violate some very fundamental principle of physics – conservation of matter and energy.

But as we mentioned, for life, if the conservation principle holds there, then how can scientists explain death. And how can they explain the creation of life? How can they explain that from non-life, life comes and again from life, non-life comes? This seems to violate any law of conservation or inertia that materialists may invoke. We accept that life is a separate principle (atma) from matter and thus can be conserved. But modern science has not yet advanced to this point.

Transcendental Nectar of Satsanga

Sixty-two years ago, on this auspicious day, the acaryadeva made his appearance by the call of Thakura Bhaktivinoda at Sri Ksetra, Jagannatha Dhama at Puri.

Gentlemen, the offering of such an homage as has been arranged this evening to the acaryadeva is not a sectarian concern, for when we speak of the fundamental principle of gurudeva or acaryadeva, we speak of something that is of universal application. There does not arise any question of discrirninating my guru from yours or anyone else’s.

tad-vijnartham sa gurum evabhigacchet samit-panih srotriyam brahma-nistham

 

Thus it has been enjoined herewith that in order to receive that transcendental knowledge, one must approach the guru. Therefore, if the Absolute Truth is one, about which we think there is no difference of opinion, the guru cannot be two. The acaryadeva to whom we have assembled tonight to offer our humble homage is not the guru of a sectarian institution or one out of many differing exponents of the truth. On the contrary, he is the jagad-guru, or the guru of all of us, the only difference is that some obey him wholeheartedly, while others do not obey him directly.

“One should understand the spiritual master to be as good as I am,” said the Blessed Lord. “Nobody should be jealous of the spiritual master or think of him as an ordinary man, because the spiritual master is the sum total of all demigods.” That is, the acarya has been identified with God Himself. He has nothing to do with the affairs of this mundane world. He appears before us to reveal the light of the Vedas and to bestow upon us the blessing of full-fledged freedom, after which we should hanker at every step of our life’s journey.

The transcendental knowledge of the Vedas was first uttered by God to Brahma, the creator of this particular universe. From Brahma the knowledge descended to Narada, from Narada to Vyasadeva, from Vyasadeva to Madhva, and in this process of disciplic succession the transcendental knowledge was transmitted by one disciple to another till it reached Lord Gauranga, Sri Krsna Caitanya, who posed as the disciple and successor of Sri Isvara Puri. The present acaryadeva is the tenth disciplic representative from Sri Rupa Goswami, the original representative of Lord Caitanya who preached this transcendental tradition in its fullness. The knowledge that we receive from our gurudeva is not different from that imparted by God Himself and the succession of the acaryas in the preceptorial line of Brahma. We adore this auspicious day as Sri Vyasa-puja-tithi because the acarya is the living representative of Vyasadeva, the divine compiler of the Vedas, Puranas, Bhagavad gita, Mahabharata and Srimad-Bhagavatam .

We cannot know anything of the transcendental region by our limited, perverted method of okservation and experiment. But all of us can lend our eager ears for the aural reception of the transcendental sound transmitted from that region to this, through the unadulterated medium of sri gurudeva or Sri Vyasadeva. Therefore, gentlemen, we should surrender ourselves today at the feet of the representative of Sn Vyasadeva for the elimination of all our differences bred by our unsubmissive attitude. It is accordingly said in the Bhagavad-gita (4.34):

To receive transcendental knowledge, we must completely surrender ourselves to the real acarya in a spirit of ardent inquiry and service. Actual performance of service to the Absolute under the guidance of the acarya is the only vehicle by which we can assimilate transcendental knowledge. Today’s meeting for offering our humble services and homage to the feet of the acaryadeva will enable us to be favored with the capacity of assimilating the transcendental knowledge so kindly transmitted by him to all persons without distinction.

Gentlemen, although it is imperfectly that we have been enabled, by his grace, to understand the sublime messages of our acaryadeva, we must admit that we have realized definitely that the divine message from his holy lips is the congenial thing for suffering humanity. All of us should hear him patiently. If we listen to the transcendental sound without unnecessary opposition, he will surely have mercy upon us. The acarya’s message is to take us back to our original home, back to God. Let me repeat, therefore, that we should hear him patiently, follow him in the measure of our conviction and bow down at his lotus feet for releasing us from our present causeless unwillingness for serving the Absolute and all souls.

Sitting at the feet of the acaryadeva, let us try to understand from this transcendental source of knowledge what we are, what is this universe, what is God, and what is our relationship with Him. The message of Lord Caitanya is the message for the living entities and the message of the living world. Lord Caitanva did not bother himself for the upliftment of this dead world, which is suitably named Martyaloka, the world where everything is destined to die. He appeared before us four hundred and fifty years ago to tell us something of the transcendental universe, where everything is permanent and everything is for the service of the Absolute. But recently Lord Caitanya has keen misrepresented by some unscrupulous persons, and the highest philosophy of the Lord has been misinterpreted to be the cult of the lowest type of society. We are glad to announce tonight that our acaryadeva, with his usual kindness, saved us from this horrible type of degradation, and therefore we bow down at his lotus feet with all humility.

Gentlemen, although we are like ignorant children in the knowledge of Transcendence, still, my gurudeva has kindled a small fire within us to dissipate the invincible darkness of empirical knowledge. We are now so much on the safe side that no amount of philosophical argument by the empiric schools of thought can deviate us an inch from the position of our eternal dependence on the lotus feet of His Divine Grace.

Srila Sridhar Dev Goswami Maharaja says in Gradations of the Holy Name,

“Hankering In Surrender Is Our Wealth

When we reach the highest position of disappointment, then sometimes, somehow or other, from the core of our heart we pray, “Oh Lord, I am helpless, save me! I am under the control of so many enemies in the form of friends. Such a hopeless position I hold, my Lord. From time immemorial I am serving all these masters, but they are not satisfied with my service. Now I find myself in this helpless position, my Lord. You should only come on Your own accord, and assert Yourself. Then they will fly away in fear of You. Otherwise I have no hope. This sort of ardent prayer from the core of the heart towards the Savior, that is what is necessary for us.

With our faith and earnestness we can aspire after that mercy. If we increase the quality of our negativity, the feeling that we are so low, the positive will be automatically attracted. We must try to increase the power of our position as a negative unit.

Trnad api sunicena (feeling lower than the grass), dainyam (humility), atmanivedana (surrender). Hankering in surrender is our wealth. We are the sakti, the potency, and potency refers to the negative unit of the Positive, the Potent. We should increase our negative side, our hankering. The Positive will be automatically attracted to us.

Whatever beautiful and valuable things we come across, we cannot but surrender ourselves to them. That is the criterion. If we find anything higher in our vicinity, our appreciation means surrendering unto that. According to the degree of our surrender, we have to measure what degree of quality of truth we have found. That can be measured only according to the degree and intensity of surrender, how much we can surrender to what we have found, to the point of no return. And the true devotees know no satisfaction or fulfillment. They feel no trace of satisfaction that they have achieved anything. Never. The inner sweetness of the truth and its infinite characteristic are such. The truth attracts. It can attract to the highest degree and magnitude.”

Devotee: Maharaja here it is mentioned that, “they feel no trace of satisfaction that they have achieved anything. Never.” So maharaja how can a devotee develop such attitude, not hankering for any achievement.

HH Bhakti Madhava Puri Maharaja: By the grace of Krishna . Generally people don’t attempt to become depressed. They do not attempt to put themselves in situations, where they will be depressed. We have an inherent hankering for happiness. That is our nature. We want to be happy. Only problem is we are finding ourselves in a foreign environment. An environment in which, we cannot really become happy.

Because everything is being taken away from us, and ultimately whatever we endeavor for, that is temporary. So what kind of happiness can we have? Also here so many defects, i.e., birth, death, old age and disease are inflicting persons of this world. Achievement of happiness is very difficult here, impossible to achieve. So basically how to get depressed? So how to feel so depressed with this world so that we don’t want to do anything with it but only want Krishna’s mercy, to be in connection with Krishna through his mercy. How do we come to that position? That will depend on Krishna . One who is sincere, situation will be arranged such that the whole environment will feel in a negative way. Negatively influencing the devotee. And if we have no attraction for that, and only attraction for Krishna , and with a sincere heart praying dear Lord, “Kindly take me, Kindly take me to Your lotus feet. I have no desire to be here in anyway with any other being, any other person other than You. You, Your  service, Your lotus feet is all that I desire. Your service is all that I desire. All other things are secondary, of secondary importance.”  

Srila Prabhupad explained once that in his life he had a business, he had a family and had so many children and at one point he had gone to see his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur and felt so much attraction for him. But anyhow he had to do his work and raise money for supporting his family and so forth. But after some time so many things began to happen, family problems and business problems, and finally he wanted to give that all up. It was not giving any pleasure, any satisfaction to him. He was not getting any success in this. He wanted to give up all of it. So he finally took sannyasa and he thought this is a great opportunity Krishna has given me to simply meditate, on the order of my spiritual master and carry that out. I don’t have to do anything with these any other type of attachments. So that type of depressive situation comes in the life of a devotee.

And Srila Prabhupad explains that, when Krishna takes everything away from his devotee, then he has received the mercy of Krishna . That is the direct mercy of Krishna . When Krishna takes everything away, then we are receiving the mercy of Krishna . Some people are thinking if I have everything, then I am receiving the mercy of Krishna . That I have a nice job, nice family, nice house, nice this nice that, got nice car, I am successful in my life, then they think I got so much mercy. No! That may not be the real mercy of Krishna as much as one who is put into difficulty, great difficulty. He is giving up; he is forced to give up all that attachment. All material things, the sensuous objects of our existence, they are not that necessarily going to make us happy.

There are some deeper things in reality that we have to reach for. And the deepest thing is what Vaishnava is interested in. He is not interested in the superficial thing. He is interested in the deeper things. Those things, which cannot be attained by, the mere senses, sense satisfaction. They are far deeper than that. And the spiritual domain lies in there, in that region. What is beyond this world! This world, world of Mahamaya, this is one small portion, one universe out of countless millions of universes. And all these countless million material universes are like, each one is like a small mustard seed, in a bag of mustard seeds. How small is that seed, you can imagine this universe is like that. So even this whole universe is an insignificant thing from the higher perspective. And then beyond all this, bag of mustard seeds, there are the Vaikuntha planets. And there is much more extensive, the paravyoma, and yet beyond the paravyoma, there is the Krishnaloka, and all the sections, various provinces of that plane. So there is far more to understand than just this world and what is going on in this world and devotees are diving into that ocean. And that because is so far above our conception, our ability to conceive, our ability to deal with, that is over our head, far over our head, that has to come down to us only. We can’t go, expect to penetrate into that plane, unless it comes down and reveals itself to us.

And then whatever comes to us, we can only consider that as but a drop. Srila Rupa Goswami has written all those beautiful books on Rasa, Rasa-tattva. But he considered it to be only a drop of the nectar that is truly available, the highest plane. So like that. Devotees is characterized by extreme negativity, and Srila Sridhar Maharaja points out that this is the quality that distinguishes a real devotee from a so called Devotee who thinks ‘he has everything’, that we do not consider true devotion. True devotee thinks, “I have nothing”, that is the true devotee. That is the true symptom of the devotee. Who feels I am completely bereft of any taste, even taste for love of God. Even Mahaprabhu has given that example:

namnam akari bahudha nija sarva-saktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrisi tava krpa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrsam ihajani nanuragah

na anuraga means, I have no taste even for your holy name, although your holy name, your form, they are so full of so much energy. Beautiful, wonderful, magnificent, unimaginable energies. But na anuraga, I have to attraction for that. Mahaprabhu is teaching how the mood of a devotee is. I remember Srila Sridhar Maharaja would tell us, “If someone comes bragging, I have some taste, I have some taste for that”, he would say never. We don’t accept that. We don’t accept anyone who says I am experiencing Krishna . That is not the mood of a genuine devotee. Because why? This is because we are dealing with the infinite. And as much as you think, you have some connection with the infinite, that finite has some grasp of infinite, then we can understand that is all bogus. You are finite, what kind of infinite you can grasp. How much of that infinite you are grasping is only an infinitesimal portion. That is not infinite, what you are having is only infinite
